*Saturnine December* is the culmination of nearly a decade’s worth of writing, neartragedy, and perseverance. Created by Melpomenë, the sole member of the one-person black metal project Antecantamentum, this album has a backstory asdramatic as the music itself. Initially caught in the chaos of a house fire thatconsumed many of Melpomenë’s instruments, the music managed to survive, storedon hard drives that emerged intact. Even after losing her home, Melpomenë finishedthis labor of love while moving between places, giving this album a raw, deeplypersonal quality that both shines and falters at times.
The album blends a variety of black metal subgenres, leaning into melodic black metal with both blissful blackgaze moments and sharper-edged melodic black metal. At the same time, *Saturnine December* isn’t afraid to experiment, pulling in elements from other styles—such as the Gothenburg-inspired riffs in “In The Green Petrichor,” dissonant tech-death in the title track, and the post-metal moods throughout. The complexity of these shifts gives the album a progressive edge, nodding towards bands like Opeth, with long, winding songs that offer atmospheric depth and evolving melodies.
