Welcome to Woodberry Down is a collection of songs about the eponymous North London housing
estate. Singer/lyricist Ben Brill’s family were among Woodberry Down’s first residents in 1950.
Dubbed the estate of the future, and built on land that had previously been the preserve of the wealthy,
Woodberry Down’s social homes were emblematic of a new post war optimism.
Brill’s family called Woodberry Down home for over 50 years, eventually seeing the estate fall into
managed decline. Not long after his grandmother’s death in 2006, the bulldozers moved in, and the
foundations were laid for a new, privately owned housing development. Those Unfortunates have created a delightful series of vignettes, channeling influences from The Kinks to Blur to the location based songwriting of Darren Hayman.
“There’s much to enjoy in the song styles and playing, which echo the likes of The Smiths, TVPs,
Mercury Rev and Madness.” – Shindig Magazine Jan 2024
