Description
Abyssalis imbibe various elements of contemporary death metal to concoct music that is at once technical, groovy, and riffdriven. Their previous EP “The Mountain” drew a good deal of attention for doing just that and they’ve taken things up a notch on their latest release. The songs are carefully structured – they are fast but not rushing through all the time, just so that they can embed themselves in the minds of the listeners.
The riffs are catchy and fleshed out, ensuring that they remain memorable, and the delivery is brisk yet impactful. Mac Smith, fresh from his stint in Eschaton, once again does a stellar job doing vocals matching the tone and mood of the music, varying his deep growls with acidic rasps especially in moments of the blackened influences seeping through. “Adaptation” is a solid, enjoyable EP and coupled with their previous material as bonus, the definitive release serves as a fine introduction for this unheralded band that is poised for bigger things in the future.
