While not quite as competitive as the Los Angeles and New Your City area hard rock scenes of the 80s and early 80s, Chicago had its fair share of heavy hitters. Of the most popular, both within the city itself and on a national and even international level was Ohio transplants DEFCON.
Formed in Akron, Ohio in the summer of 1987, the band made the move to Chicago the following year where they more than “made a mark,” becoming one of the biggest drawing bands in town in no time. Shortly after hitting town, the band began recording demos in the same studios that acts like Styx and Survivor were using. These demos caught the ear of at the time Whitesnake bassist, Rudy Sarzo and upon completion of his ‘Slip of the Tongue’ sessions, Sarzo headed to Chicago and began working with the band on their next set of demos, ‘Phase 2.’ Recorded at the Chicago Recording Company studio, Phase II’ featured ‘Cold Hearted’, ‘All Night Long’ and ‘Don’t Stop the Lovin.’
The demos attracted the attention of the hard rock music press worldwide. The next item to cross off the band’s bucket list was to record a self-financedi album in 1991. While well received the album didn’t move the major label needle and the band members moved on to session with acts such as Eddie Money, Rita Coolidge, Slammin Gladys and more. ‘Time Waits for No One’ is a compilation of the above mentioned demos, along with two live tracks. It’s a think back on what could have been from one of America’s brightest hopes at the end of an era.
