Description
“Chapter One” is a debut album of the southwestern German doomsters SHAYTAN, although it’s not exactly a debut because the band was previously known as DEMON INCARNATE and had three full-lengths and one EP under their belt. However, with the recent line-up change, most notably an addition of a very talented vocalist Julian who replaced their female singer, they decided to start afresh with a new name. And you can definitely hear that the guys are not newbies. They deliver raw, no-bullshit traditional doom metal, dwelling mostly in mid tempos with an occasional slowdown and tempo acceleration.
With the appropriate dirt under their fingernails, a sound foundation has been created that draws from the primordial sludge of the classic heavy rock of the ’70s like BLACK SABBATH and PENTAGRAM, ’80s and ’90s doom of the legends like TROUBLE, CANDLEMASS, THE OBSESSED and SOLITUDE AETURNUS, but also display strong similarities to the newer purveyors of the genre, in particular NOMAD SON and KRUX. Their riffs are heavy and the songs are replete with the most captivating choruses, often supplemented with oriental influences. There’s not a single dull moment on this album and with its mere 34 minutes it doesn’t overstay its welcome. The warm production rounds it up perfectly, resulting in the most pleasant listening experience.
