SOLD OUT

East London duo Bobby Zodiac and The Clairvoyants’ phenomenologically driven second outing, !, is
an album of big emotions and tiny pieces of bric-a-brac, conjuring a realm in which the outlines
of Atlantis can be spied reflected in a thrift shop window.

Weaving between Jimmy Clairvoyant’s harmony rich, electro driven, hook laden musical pallet Bobby
Zodiac delivers lyrical expositions and exultations in an act of preposterous cosmic sincerity. For this
is a world whereinWham! meet John Cooper Clarke via Arthur C Clarke. A circus where Roxy
Music bunk off art school and Lawrence drinks double espresso, Sleaford Mods sweeten up, Tim
Ten Yen is his generation’s Englebert Humperdink, and the Magic Circle have replaced rock ‘n’
roll.

! revs into gear with the rabble rousing, Sparks informed, Top-30-chart mockery of ‘Straight to the
Top’, while the Eric von Daniken / JeffWayne’s War of theWorlds love child that is ‘Egyptians’
sets the tone with its prismatically shattered vocal and brain burned lyric. ‘Command to Look’ tips the
hat to controversial ’40s photographerWilliam Mortinson in an ultra-submissive love song
swathed in Shaftesque guitar rhythms and KLF beats, until crooning pedal steel sweeps into ‘Astral
Plane’s’ tale of trans-dimensional romance and alternate-reality geography.

‘It takes guts to be kind!’ declares Zodiac in shell shocked Smithsonian paraphrase, amidst the debris of UFOs, yetis, ghosts and tartan slippers, as compassion and spontaneous combustion hold sway in !’s lightersaloft centre piece, ‘Burning Light’. ‘Vieni Sui Mas’ provides an interlude of accordion and tarot card reading before the vocodered beauty and aquatic chug of ‘Atlantis’, surfaces in a wave of Beach
Boysesque key modulation and Kraftwerkian utopianism, had the Dusseldorf boys swapped cycling
for mythology and double dosing. !’s deepest cut, ‘Cro-Magnum’, stomps a bluesy path across
primitive topography in a funky collision between Side 2 of Tubular Bells and the Glitter Band,
shadowed by Bobby Zodiac patron saint tribute ‘John Dee’, a la-la-la-rich, poptastic celebration of the
great Elizabethan alchemist, atop the sweet chimes of an OMD gone-chintzy backing track. Parting
moment, ‘Epilogue’, stands alone at a local bus stop to wave a well oiled surrealistic adieu. Shazam!
